Mad Max

For reasons long forgotten, two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They'd built a house of straw. The thundering machines sputtered and stopped. Their leaders talked and talked and talked, but nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled. Cities exploded. A whirlwind of looting, a firestorm of fear. Men began to feed on men. On the roads it was a white-line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice. And in this maelstrom of decay, ordinary men were battered and smashed.

The Road Warrior

I think that the Stranger and the dog Max (Warlands ABGWL021) produced by Aberant Game is the only expy of Max Rockatansky in the 20mm world.

The Stranger is true 20mm, while the dog is enormously oversized.

To bring Max up to size, I lengthened both his torso and his legs. I felt the torso (or perhaps the jacket) looked too short, and needed modification to look proportional.

While I was at it, I fixed his hair a bit, added a leg brace, and switched the boot knife on his left to the right.

The right sleeve of Max's jacket is missing in the movie, but it would have been too much effort to modify the miniature. I'll just say he's wearing a long sleeved shirt under the jacket like he did in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

I probably should have smoothed out the sculpted eyes of the figure, but since I didn't, I had to paint them. Because of this, he is somewhat bug-eyed in close-up.

You should check out North Star figures, they make 20mm figures for Gaslands. I believe they have a mad max figure called the interceptor driver. Really cool figures. Also Mad Cars by green miniatures makes some road warrior inspired 20mm figures. They even made this cool female version of mad max.

Your blog is great. Keep up the great work! I like that you show the measurements of the figures, it really helps to visualize the scale. I am just getting into 1/72 scale I like it a lot-plus the storage space is much easier for 1/72 games as opposed to 28mm.

Hi AB!

Thanks for the heads up with North Star and Green Miniatures. Copplestone did a really nice job of on Mel's face for the North Star stuff, but I wish he put a little more effort into the rest of the figure.

Not sure about the 3D stuff from Green Minis, but I might try to put in an order once things get more stable financially.

Yeah, I see what you mean about details in Max. Its nice when those details are there. I purchased the wasteland warriors from North Star pack of 5 and quite detailed in person I must say. Their in 20mm, but more like 23mm tall. they fit nice next to hot wheels cars. They also have a futuristic like police crew of 5. One of the figures looks like Deckard from Blade runner.

I highly recommend North Star, I like how they are cast in metal. Its like the old school toy soldiers. they seem to be hand sculpted as well, don't know that much about Copplestone's sculpting process, I at least think he hand sculpts the originals. I like his work. Heck maybe I will email him and ask him?

I here you there, would love to order more stuff. But holding out at the moment. I have seen reviews of Green Minis, people seem to like em and they look nice. Hope you get around to ordering some in the near future and making a review, of North Star or Green Minis. I would like to see what you make of them.

Cheers!
